The Turkish military today launched airstrikes on Mount Matina, near the village of Balava in Amedi district, as clashes with PKK guerrillas persist in the border areas of Duhok. This comes despite the PKK’s unilateral ceasefire and the start of a new peace process in Turkey aimed at resolving the Kurdish issue.
Kamran Osman, from the CPT organization monitoring conflict zones, confirmed the airstrikes, stating, “No civilians were killed, but the bombing caused fear and anxiety among villagers and tourists in the area.”
Although peace negotiations have been ongoing in Turkey for more than a month, the situation along the border remains unstable. Gunfire, explosions, and airstrikes continue, forcing residents to flee their homes and leaving the region in a constant state of danger.
According to information obtained by Peregraf, the Turkish military has escalated its operations in various border regions, particularly in Duhok province, defending them as necessary measures to eliminate PKK fighters. Meanwhile, the PKK leadership, which had declared a ceasefire in line with Abdullah Ocalan’s late February peace initiative, now asserts its right to respond to continued Turkish attacks.
The ongoing military operations cast doubt on the future of the peace process, as the conflict continues to disrupt the lives of people in the affected areas.
