Peregraf- Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Wednesday attended the signing ceremony of a Heads of Agreement (HOA) between Iraq’s Ministry of Oil and U.S. energy giant ExxonMobil, marking the company’s renewed role in Iraq’s oil sector.

The signing, held in Baghdad, was attended by U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Iraq and a senior ExxonMobil delegation led by Peter Larden, Senior Vice President.

According to the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office, Al-Sudani described the agreement as "an important step for the future of Iraq’s oil sector and for deepening economic relations with the United States," stressing that Iraq remains open to major global firms willing to invest in developing its oil and gas industries.

The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s focus on expanding cooperation with leading companies, particularly American firms, to boost production at strategic fields such as the Majnoon oilfield in Basra.

He underlined Iraq’s commitment to attracting investments in energy, especially in gas development projects, to reduce reliance on imports and improve energy security.

Al-Sudani also noted the importance of ExxonMobil’s role in upgrading Iraq’s oil export infrastructure, diversifying export outlets, and introducing advanced technologies to raise production and efficiency.

For his part, ExxonMobil’s Peter Larden thanked the Iraqi government for its support, congratulated Iraq on its National Day, and praised what he described as "remarkable progress across different sectors" in the country.
