Nechirvan Barzani Urges Civilized Election Campaign, Calls for Protection of Women Candidates
Peregraf– Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday called on political parties and candidates to conduct a “civilized” election campaign ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary vote scheduled for November 11, stressing the importance of protecting the dignity and positions of women candidates.
In a message released on the eve of the campaign, which officially begins at midnight on Friday, Barzani urged all political forces to respect the instructions of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and avoid actions that could disrupt social peace or fuel division.
“Everyone should be free to advocate their policies, direction and agenda, but no one should spread hatred,” Barzani said. “The Kurdish people, as a civil society, must conduct a civil struggle in this process. Women’s candidacy is very important. Their names, positions and dignity must be protected.”
The president also emphasized respect for the “symbols and sacred things” of all communities, and called on security forces to perform their duties professionally and without discrimination in order to safeguard all candidates and the electoral process.
He reminded candidates that their mission in Baghdad should be to serve both Kurdistan and Iraq: “With unity, solidarity and togetherness, they can better protect the rights, achievements and interests of Kurdistan Region and Iraq.”
According to IHEC, campaigning for the elections will run from October 3 until 7:00 a.m. on November 8. A total of 7,768 candidates have been approved, including 2,248 women and 5,520 men.
Barzani concluded his message by wishing all candidates a peaceful campaign and stability and progress for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
