The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s Ministry of Electricity announced that Dana Gas will carry out annual maintenance at the Khor Mor gas field from September 20–22, temporarily cutting 300 million cubic feet of gas production per day. The shutdown is expected to reduce the capacity of power plants by more than 1,600 megawatts, raising concerns over electricity supply.
The Ministry of Electricity said it will coordinate with the Ministry of Natural Resources to manage the disruption and mitigate the impact on consumers.
Khor Mor, the Kurdistan Region’s largest gas field, supplies natural gas to major power plants in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian, meeting more than 75% of the region’s electricity demand. The field is operated by Dana Gas and its partner Crescent Petroleum, who in August reported a milestone of 500 million barrels of oil equivalent in cumulative production, with daily output averaging 525 million standard cubic feet of gas—a 75% increase since 2017.
Dana Gas is expanding operations through its KM250 project, which aims to raise processing capacity by 50% by early 2026. In parallel, a $160 million development plan is under way at the Chemchemal field, one of Iraq’s largest undeveloped gas assets, with initial production targeted for late 2026.
Despite recent investments, Khor Mor has faced security challenges. Over the past two years, the field has been targeted in several missile and drone attacks, including an April 2024 incident that killed four Yemeni workers.
Dana Gas has secured a $250 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to support expansion and enhance production capacity, reinforcing its long-term role in sustaining the Kurdistan Region’s energy sector.
