The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has issued a directive prohibiting the coverage of crime scenes, suspects, and details of incidents by media outlets and social media platforms.
The Department of Media and Information announced on Wednesday that the decision was made following a request from the Independent Human Rights Commission, aiming to protect the course of legal investigations and uphold human rights principles.
"According to a directive from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which has been circulated to all ministries and government institutions, no channel or social media page will be allowed to publish scenes and videos of crime incidents, suspects, or the location and time of crimes," the department stated.
The Human Rights Commission requested the measure to prevent the exploitation of incidents for political or social discord, safeguard the psychological and social wellbeing of individuals, and ensure public safety.
The department added that the directive is designed to maintain security, protect individuals and society, and respect the integrity of judicial investigations.
