The New Generation Movement (Nawa-i-Nwe) issued a strong response after its leader, Shaswar Abdulwahid, was sentenced to five months in prison by a Sulaymaniyah court on charges of defamation and threats.
The court case was brought by former New Generation MP Shadi Nawzad, who accused Abdulwahid of threatening to publish compromising videos. The verdict comes at a sensitive political moment, with the Iraqi parliamentary elections scheduled for November 11.
In its statement, the New Generation described the ruling as politically motivated and expected. The movement criticized the manner of Abdulwahid’s earlier arrest, when security forces raided his house at night. “Today’s decision of the Sulaymaniyah court was expected for us and for the people of the Kurdistan Region,” the statement read. “We tell the Talabani and Barzani families that the arrest of Shaswar Abdulwahid will only increase his popularity.”
The movement further declared that it had already completed its preparations for the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections, signaling its determination to remain active despite the legal challenges facing its leader.
