The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced on Monday that over one trillion Iraqi dinars have been deposited to cover June salaries for public employees and pensioners.

According to the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the sum of 1,007,352,000,000 Iraqi dinars (approximately $768 million) was transferred to the ministry’s account at the Central Bank of Iraq’s Erbil branch.

The ministry confirmed that salary distribution will begin on Tuesday, September 2, and will be completed by Thursday, September 4.

This transfer comes as the Kurdistan Region continues to face chronic salary delays due to disputes with Baghdad over budget allocations and oil revenues. In recent years, the Iraqi federal government has periodically released funds to the KRG after negotiations, but disagreements on revenue sharing and control of oil exports have repeatedly created financial uncertainty for public employees.

In June, the Iraqi Ministry of Finance had already deposited 690 billion dinars as part of the monthly salary funding, with the latest tranche now completing the required amount for that month’s payroll.

The KRG has around 1.2 million people on its payroll, including civil servants, teachers, healthcare workers, and security forces. Salary delays have frequently triggered public anger and protests, particularly among low-income employees who rely heavily on timely payments.

According to Peregraf reporting, salary disputes between Baghdad and Erbil have long been a source of political tension. While the federal government insists on tighter oversight of KRG revenues, the Kurdish authorities argue that their share of the federal budget is constitutionally guaranteed. The issue is also tied to larger political disagreements between the two sides on energy exports, customs revenues, and regional autonomy.
