Halabja’s forests and villages have been burning for more than 24 hours, leaving two people dead and causing severe environmental destruction.

The Halabja Forest and Environment Police confirmed the death of one of their employees, identified as Mohammed Haidar, who lost his life while attempting to put out the flames. Another victim, Ari Mukhtar, a well-known environmentalist, died on Saturday evening during firefighting efforts.

The fire has destroyed thousands of trees and hundreds of acres of farmland and gardens belonging to villages in the affected area. Strong winds and rugged terrain have fueled the blaze, making it difficult for firefighters, volunteers, and civil defense teams to bring it under control.

Kurdistan Region’s Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani paid tribute to Mukhtar, calling him a "martyr environmentalist." He praised the courage of environmentalists and volunteers battling the flames, saying: "The martyrdom of Mr. Ari and the efforts of environmentalists to protect the forests, mountains, and nature of Kurdistan carry a deep humanitarian and patriotic message. Love and protection of the environment know no limits."

Talabani added that the government will honor Mukhtar by naming a site in Halabja after him, ensuring his legacy remains alive among the people of Kurdistan.

The fire continues to burn across large swaths of Halabja’s mountains, with authorities warning of further damage if the blaze is not contained.
