A senior figure in the Iran-backed Harakat al-Nujaba militia warned on Sunday that airstrikes on Iraqi targets are "imminent and could happen at any moment," accusing the United States of leading a campaign to weaken "resistance factions" through disarmament.
Mahdi Kaabi, a prominent member of Nujaba, said in a televised interview that the security agreement signed last week by senior Iranian politician Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council was unlikely to be implemented. He described "resistance groups" as “the stronger side of the equation,” despite U.S. military superiority and what he claimed were “spies and mercenaries” operating inside Iraq.
Kaabi vowed that Nujaba and allied factions would never surrender their weapons, insisting that their presence prevents Iraq from facing another collapse like the 2014 advance of ISIS. “We see a great coordination of the enemy in Lebanon and Iraq in terms of steps and plans to disarm the resistance. This is the U.S. project to subjugate the resistance,” he said.
Harakat al-Nujaba is one of the most hardline militias within Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an umbrella network of armed groups with close ties to Iran. It has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, which accuses it of carrying out attacks against American forces. Nujaba openly pledges loyalty to Iran’s Supreme Leader and has also fought in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.
The warnings come amid heightened regional tensions as the ongoing Iran–Israel confrontation spills over into Iraq and Lebanon. U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria in the past have come under repeated rocket and drone attacks claimed by Iran-aligned militias. Analysts say calls to disarm the PMF and its factions are part of wider efforts to limit Tehran’s influence and prevent Iraq from becoming a launchpad in the escalating shadow war.
