Iraq has achieved a historic milestone in its electricity production, reaching a record 28,000 megawatts for the first time, Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadhil announced on Thursday.

“This is an unprecedented record in Iraq’s history,” the minister’s media office said, highlighting the success as part of a broader strategic plan to address the country’s chronic power shortages.

Fadhil attributed the achievement to long-term maintenance contracts, plant upgrades, advanced cooling systems, and the partial use of imported fuel. He said the ministry’s approach has helped boost efficiency despite ongoing challenges.

Looking ahead, the minister said Iraq is pushing forward with ambitious agreements to expand capacity even further. “We have signed deals with General Electric to build power plants with a combined capacity of 24,000 megawatts and with Siemens for 14,000 megawatts,” he said.

Additionally, he revealed that a new agreement with Shanghai Electric for an additional 10,000 megawatts is expected to be signed soon to help meet Iraq’s rapidly growing demand for electricity.
