The Iraqi Independent High Election Commission (IHEC) has officially announced the statistics for political entities and individuals set to compete in the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 11, 2025. A draw to determine the electoral numbers of the candidates will take place on Saturday, September 8.

According to IHEC, 31 political alliances, 38 parties, and 79 independent candidates have registered to run in the election. The independent candidates are broken down into 23 general candidates and 56 representing community components.

IHEC reaffirmed the eligibility criteria for candidates, which require each nominee to be:

  • An Iraqi national
  • At least 30 years old
  • Of full legal capacity
  • A holder of at least a bachelor’s degree

However, political parties and coalitions are permitted to nominate up to 20 percent of their candidates with only a high school diploma, under a special exception.

Candidates must also meet moral and legal standards. Those with convictions involving moral turpitude, financial misconduct, or administrative corruption are barred from running. Additionally, members of the armed and security forces, sitting judges, and employees of the election commission are prohibited from candidacy to preserve the integrity and impartiality of the electoral process.

IHEC stressed that the upcoming election represents a vital opportunity for the Iraqi people to shape their political future. The commission pledged to uphold transparency, fairness, and adherence to legal standards throughout every phase of the electoral process.
