A high-level delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), headed by Minister of Natural Resources, arrived in Baghdad on Monday for intensive discussions with federal officials over a new proposal aimed at resolving long-standing disputes between the two sides.
According to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to Peregraf, the talks will focus on a draft agreement prepared by the federal government. The proposal seeks to address critical issues related to oil exports, budget allocations, and the financial entitlements of the Kurdistan Region.
The visit comes amid growing frustration across the Kurdistan Region, where public sector employees have yet to receive their May and June salaries. Baghdad has tied the release of funds to the KRG’s compliance with federal budget obligations, including the handover of oil revenues and a larger share of non-oil income.
Both Erbil and Baghdad have expressed cautious optimism about reaching a comprehensive agreement soon, after months of stalled negotiations. A breakthrough could pave the way for resuming oil exports from the Kurdistan Region and restoring regular salary payments.
Officials close to the negotiations say Monday’s meetings will be critical and could set the stage for a formal deal in the coming days.
