Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, urging all parties to pursue dialogue and diplomacy as a path toward regional stability.
“I welcome President Donald Trump’s announcement of Iran-Israel ceasefire,” Barzani said in a statement on X. “I firmly believe that the only viable path toward lasting stability, security, and prosperity in the Middle East lies in inclusive, constructive dialogue and mutual understanding among all parties.”
Barzani extended his appreciation to Trump and other international leaders “for their commitment to diplomacy and peaceful resolution of conflicts at this critical time.”
The ceasefire, announced by Trump early Tuesday, is set to take effect in two phases—beginning with a halt in Iranian military operations, followed 12 hours later by a cessation of Israeli hostilities. Trump later confirmed that the ceasefire had taken effect.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had agreed to the proposal and added that Israeli strikes on Tehran had killed another “senior nuclear scientist.” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied a formal agreement had been brokered but stated that Tehran would halt its attacks if Israel did the same.
Tensions between the two countries escalated sharply on June 13, when Israel launched airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities and many cities across Iran, resulting in the deaths of several nuclear scientists and senior military commanders. Tehran retaliated with multiple waves of missile and drone attacks against Israeli targets.
According to Iran’s health ministry, at least 400 people have been killed in Israeli strikes inside Iran. On the Israeli side, 24 people have been killed in Iran’s retaliatory attacks, based on official figures.
