The Iraqi government on Sunday condemned overnight U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the move a "serious threat" to regional peace and urging diplomatic dialogue over military action.
"The Iraqi government expresses its deep concern and condemnation of the targeting of nuclear facilities within the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran," said government spokesman Basem al-Awadi. He added that continued escalation would pose dangers beyond Iran’s borders.
The airstrikes, ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump, targeted Iran’s key nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Trump said six bunker-buster bombs struck Fordow, while submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles hit the other two.
Labeling the operation a "spectacular military success," Trump warned of further consequences if Iran did not retreat: "There will either be peace, or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than what we have witnessed in the past eight days."
Tensions have soared since Israel struck Iranian nuclear infrastructure on June 13, followed by retaliatory Iranian strikes. The U.S. operation appears to mark a turning point, halting backchannel nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
