In response to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, and the resulting suspension of several airline routes, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has taken swift action to repatriate thousands of citizens stranded abroad.
The KRG announced that a total of 13,001 citizens have had their return facilitated, with many already back in Kurdistan and the process ongoing. The initiative came amid a week of regional unrest and limited international flight availability, which left many citizens, including pilgrims, unable to travel home.
The effort was coordinated through the Ministry of Interior, the Department of Foreign Relations, and the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs—specifically for those returning from Saudi Arabia. The KRG worked closely with relevant countries to arrange safe passage and resolve logistical hurdles.
A dedicated hotline and online form were launched to register stranded citizens. In coordination with Turkish authorities, three-day visas were secured to facilitate transit for those affected.
Among those assisted, 5,000 citizens returning from Iran have already crossed back into the Kurdistan Region.
The KRG reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens and encouraged anyone still facing difficulties to contact the government’s hotlines for immediate assistance.
