Iraq has called on Iran to refrain from targeting American assets within its borders, a senior Iraqi security official revealed Saturday, as tensions surge following military exchanges between Israel and Iran.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that Baghdad had delivered a formal request to Tehran in an effort to prevent escalation on Iraqi soil. “The request was made. They promised us positive things,” the official said, adding that Iran responded with “understanding” to Iraq’s concerns.

Iraq maintains close ties with Iran but also hosts around 2,500 U.S. troops as part of an international coalition against extremist groups. This delicate balancing act has placed Baghdad in a precarious position amid renewed conflict.

The recent flare-up began Friday with Israeli strikes on military and nuclear sites in Iran. In response, Iran has signaled potential retaliation against U.S. military bases in the region if nuclear talks with Washington collapse.

Throughout the Gaza conflict, which erupted in October 2023, Iran-backed armed factions in Iraq and Syria have repeatedly attacked U.S. forces using drones and rockets. In anticipation of further unrest, the U.S. reduced staff at its Baghdad embassy earlier this week, citing security risks.

Meanwhile, powerful Iran-aligned militias in Iraq, including Kataeb Hezbollah, have renewed calls for U.S. forces to leave the country, warning of “additional wars in the region.”
