The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Health has confirmed a new case of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in the Ranya district, Sulaymaniyah province bringing the total number of cases in the region this year to four.
The patient is a 29-year-old man from Ranya who had contact with infected animals, according to the ministry. He was initially suspected of having dengue fever but was later diagnosed with CCHF following a series of tests.
“After showing symptoms and undergoing diagnostic procedures and treatment, the patient is currently in intensive care. His condition is stable,” the ministry said in a statement.
Of the four confirmed cases in 2025, one patient has died while the other two have fully recovered and been discharged from hospital.
The Ministry of Health urged citizens to follow health guidelines, particularly those who work with animals. “If signs of disease appear in animals, veterinary teams should be notified immediately,” the ministry said. “Anyone involved in animal husbandry or handling animal products should seek medical care without delay if they experience any suspicious symptoms.”
CCHF is a serious viral illness transmitted by ticks or through contact with the blood or tissues of infected animals. It can be fatal in severe cases. The ministry stressed the importance of early detection and preventive measures to contain the spread.
