The third edition of the Middle East Tourism Exhibition (METEX 2025) commenced today in Erbil, attracting participation from over 200 tourism companies and organizations representing 20 countries. The event, which will run for three days until Thursday, May 8, 2025, showcases the latest advancements and requirements in the tourism sector.

Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), highlighted the changing global perception of the region. He remarked, 'Historically, our identity was largely defined by crises. However, we are now showcasing ourselves through various channels, especially tourism,' during the inauguration ceremony, while overlooking the ongoing salary crisis affecting public sector employees.

Lawand Mamundi, the exhibition’s coordinator, highlighted the inclusion of specialized discussions and academic panels featuring industry experts. "Throughout the exhibition, unique insights and research will be presented to further advance the tourism sector," Mamundi noted.

He also called on the Iraqi federal government and the KRG to prioritize the renovation of tourist sites, asserting, "The Kurdistan Region is home to numerous rare historical landmarks and captivating tourist destinations. With greater investment, these sites can rival those of neighboring countries and beyond."

Barzani outlined the government’s efforts to streamline tourism as part of broader economic diversification. "We have worked extensively to facilitate the tourism sector, aiming to boost revenue streams. From Zakho to Halabja, we have strategic plans to elevate tourism infrastructure," he affirmed.

Reflecting on Kurdistan’s global identity, Barzani added, "While our past narrative often centered on national struggles and tragedies, Kurdistan has far more to offer. Geographically, it boasts breathtaking landscapes, a legacy of diverse civilizations, and a model of interfaith and ethnic coexistence—all of which can attract international visitors."

METEX 2025 apparently serves as a platform to foster regional tourism collaboration, spotlighting the Kurdistan Region’s potential as a premier travel destination.
