French FM in Erbil Meets Kurdistan Officials, Voices Support for Stability, Urges Cabinet Formation

French Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot met with senior officials in the Kurdistan Region during a visit to Erbil on Tuesday, reaffirming France’s strong support for the Region. Talks focused on regional stability, bilateral relations, the fight against ISIS, the urgent formation of a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet, and the resumption of oil exports.
According to a statement by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Minister Barrot described the Kurdistan Region as “an important pillar of security and stability in the Middle East” and reiterated France’s commitment to enhancing ties. Barzani noted that both sides agreed on the need to swiftly form the new KRG cabinet.
“We also discussed Erbil-Baghdad relations, the importance of safeguarding the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region, upholding Iraq’s federal system, and resuming oil exports from the Kurdistan Region as soon as possible,” Barzani said.
Later, Minister Barrot met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani. Following their meeting, the two held a joint press conference. President Barzani thanked France and President Emmanuel Macron for their enduring support, “especially in difficult times,” and emphasized the need to further deepen relations. “We held an intensive meeting,” he added.
Minister Barrot said his visit underscored the strength of France’s relationship with the Kurdistan Region and reaffirmed his country’s support, particularly in the fight against ISIS.
