Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani announced today that he will run for re-election in the upcoming parliamentary elections, confirming his intentions during a speech at the 9th Sulaymaniyah Forum hosted by the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS).
"I will run for re-election as prime minister," Sudani said during a panel discussion at the high-profile event, which gathered Iraqi and international policymakers, diplomats, and academics.
The declaration marks the official start of Al-Sudani’s campaign for a second term in office, as the country heads toward a new election cycle. Since assuming office in late 2022, Al-Sudani has prioritized anti-corruption efforts, economic reform, and a balanced foreign policy.
The talks come at a crucial time, as the Iraqi Council of Ministers has set November 11 as the date for the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections. The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission has confirmed its readiness to conduct the vote on schedule and has already opened registration for political parties, coalitions, and independent candidates. The registration window will remain open until May 4.
