The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) will officially open registration for Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections on April 15, 2025. Political parties, coalitions, and independent candidates will have 20 days to submit their applications, with the process closing on May 4.
This step comes as part of preparations for the national elections scheduled for November 11, 2025, as confirmed by the Iraqi Council of Ministers.
In a statement to Peregraf, IHEC spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalai affirmed the commission’s readiness to conduct the elections on time. “We are fully prepared to oversee the electoral process according to the legal timeline,” she said.
The current parliamentary session began on January 9, 2022, and is set to end on January 9, 2026. In line with Iraq’s Election Law No. 12 of 2018, elections must be held at least 45 days before the end of the term, making the November date crucial for legal compliance.
To support the process, Iraq’s Parliament extended IHEC’s mandate during a session on January 13, 2025. The commission’s new term will run from January 7, 2025, to January 6, 2027. Lawmakers say the extension is necessary to ensure stability and oversight throughout the election period.
Iraq last held parliamentary elections on October 10, 2021—an early vote triggered by mass protests and demands for reform. That election marked the beginning of Iraq’s fifth parliamentary term.
With preparations underway and legal frameworks reinforced, Iraq moves closer to another critical electoral milestone.
