Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has called upon the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and his own party to "accelerate" the formation of the upcoming Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet, warning that "a major crisis has emerged in the region and the world, and an even greater crisis may loom." Barzani also cautioned regarding Iraq's situation, stating that "a major war is underway in the region."

During a speech at the opening of the 17th Erbil International Book Fair, Barzani once again urged all winning political blocs in the recent elections to participate in the formation of the KRG’s 10th cabinet according to their respective representation.

Barzani emphasized that the "primary responsibility" for government formation rests with the KDP and PUK, directing a clear message: "Expedite the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s cabinet."

"Thus far, they have taken positive steps, but time remains of the essence. They must complete the process and establish the cabinet as soon as possible, because, as we witness, a major crisis has emerged around us and across the world, and an even greater crisis may be on the horizon," the KDP leader stated.

Regarding tensions between Erbil and Baghdad, Barzani asserted that "all political forces—both in the Kurdistan Region and in Baghdad—must have the courage to acknowledge their mistakes and turn a new page, so that Iraq does not face even greater challenges."

Barzani highlighted the complexities of the regional situation and issued a warning regarding threats to Iraq, stating that "a major war has erupted in the region, and a larger conflict is unfolding." He added, "We hope these wars end as soon as possible and that the suffering of the people ceases, whether in Palestine, Lebanon, or any other region."

"Most importantly, those currently in power in Baghdad must strive with all their might to ensure Iraq does not become entangled in these wars," Barzani stressed.

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been in a prolonged political deadlock since the October 2024 parliamentary elections, with the two main rival parties—the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)—struggling to finalize a power-sharing agreement for the new government. Despite the KDP securing the largest share of seats, negotiations over cabinet positions, particularly key ministries, have stalled, delaying the formation of the 10th Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The political impasse comes at a critical time, as the wider Middle East faces escalating instability, including the Israel-Hamas war, heightened tensions in Lebanon, and the risk of broader regional conflict involving Iran-aligned factions. Iraq itself remains vulnerable, with lingering disputes between Erbil and Baghdad over oil exports, budget allocations, and the implementation of the federal budget law.

Barzani’s urgent appeal underscores concerns that further delays could weaken the KRG’s ability to address economic challenges, maintain security, and navigate growing regional threats. His warning about a "major war" reflects fears that Iraq—already grappling with internal divisions—could be further destabilized if political factions fail to act swiftly.

International observers have repeatedly emphasized the need for a functional Kurdish government to ensure stability in Iraq and the broader region. With crises mounting, pressure is increasing on Kurdish leaders to resolve their differences and form a government before external tensions spill over into Iraqi territory.
