Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani made his first phone call today, Tuesday, with newly appointed Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, during which the two leaders exchanged Eid al-Fitr greetings.

According to a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister's media office, al-Sudani extended his congratulations to the Syrian people on the formation of their new government. He reaffirmed Iraq’s steadfast support for the choices of the Syrian people and emphasized the importance of an inclusive political process that represents all segments of Syrian society. Such inclusivity, he noted, would strengthen peaceful coexistence and societal security, contributing to a stable and secure future for both Syria and the wider region.

During the conversation, al-Sudani also condemned any Israeli military incursion into Syrian territory, reiterating Baghdad’s firm stance on respecting Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity while rejecting any foreign interference.

Additionally, both leaders discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in countering the ongoing threat posed by ISIS. They also explored avenues for deepening economic collaboration to serve the mutual interests of Iraq and Syria.

This phone call marks the first direct communication between al-Sudani and al-Sharaa, signaling a continued effort to reinforce ties between Baghdad and Damascus amid ongoing regional challenges.
