The Iraqi Border Forces have arrested 16 individuals of Asian nationalities attempting to illegally cross the border within Sulaymaniyah Governorate, the Border Forces Command announced.

The arrests were made in two separate operations by the Third Border Brigade, under the First Region Border Command. Authorities have filed a formal arrest report, and legal measures have been taken against the detainees.

This incident follows a similar operation in February 2025, when the Iraqi Border Guard Forces apprehended 28 infiltrators of Asian nationalities attempting to cross the border illegally in the same region.

Brigadier General Muqdad Miri, spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, previously confirmed that the First Regiment of the Third Border Brigade carried out the February arrests as part of ongoing efforts to curb infiltration and smuggling.

“The Border Forces Command remains committed to preventing illegal infiltration into Iraqi territory and will continue its operations to uphold border security,” Brigadier General Miri stated.

While Iraq’s Border Forces operate under the Ministry of Interior, the Kurdistan Region’s border security is predominantly handled by Kurdish personnel, who have long maintained checkpoints and headquarters in strategic areas.

The Kurdistan Region shares borders with Iran to the east, Turkey to the north, and Syria to the northwest, making it a key zone for border security operations.
