Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Massoud Barzani has called for the release of Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), stressing that peace is the only viable path to resolving the Kurdish issue in Turkey.
Barzani’s message was read aloud during Newroz celebrations in Amed (Diyarbakir), where he reiterated his support for the peace process. “We hope that Mr. Abdullah Öcalan will be released as soon as possible,” Barzani stated.
Highlighting the importance of dialogue, Barzani said, “We emphasize the culture of coexistence and the message of peace. Peace is the only right way to overcome the problems.”
The KDP leader also expressed concern over the situation of Kurds in Syria, urging a peaceful resolution to their struggles. “We hope that the suffering of the Kurdish people in Syria will end. The Kurds will reach a conclusion with other parties in Syria through peaceful means that will serve everyone,” he added.
Barzani’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the Kurdish issue in Turkey and the broader region, with political actors closely watching developments related to Öcalan’s imprisonment and potential peace negotiations.
