Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani received a phone call from US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, during which they discussed regional security, counterterrorism efforts, and ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

According Al-Sudani press release, He emphasized that de-escalation and dialogue are the most effective approaches to addressing crises in the sensitive and strategically vital Middle East. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to ensuring that the use of force remains an exclusive prerogative of the state, a stance aimed at promoting internal stability and reinforcing national sovereignty.

This commitment aligns with Al-Sudani’s broader efforts to consolidate state authority over armed groups operating within Iraq. In previous discussions with international partners, such as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Al-Sudani has been urged to reinforce state control over weapons, reflecting a shared interest in reducing the influence of non-state actors and integrating them into official security structures.

For his part, Secretary Hegseth stated that the United States will continue its operations unless Houthi attacks on US forces and their impact on navigation in the Red Sea cease.

Both leaders also addressed the growing threat of ISIS in Syria, stressing their determination to prevent the group from posing any danger after reports indicated that ISIS has acquired new weapons and begun reorganizing its ranks.

Hegseth reiterated the United States’ long-term commitment to supporting Iraq’s security and stability, emphasizing continued cooperation between the two countries.
