KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Bafel Talabani, the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), characterized their recent meeting in Pirmam as a “very good meeting,” highlighting a “good understanding and progress” in the efforts to establish the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet.
The two leaders convened today in Pirmam to deliberate on the ongoing process of forming the upcoming KRG cabinet, following several months of negotiations between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the PUK. A collaborative committee has been engaged in developing an effective governance framework, with the objective of reconciling the political differences between the two leading parties. Once the committee finalizes its proposed strategy, it will be presented to the High Negotiating Committee for approval, thereby facilitating the establishment of the new cabinet.
Discussions between the KDP and PUK have been ongoing since the inaugural session of the Kurdistan Parliament on December 2. The KDP, which secured 39 seats in the most recent parliamentary elections, remains the largest party, while the PUK obtained 23 seats. Additionally, minority representatives and smaller parties collectively hold 38 seats, making coalition-building vital to achieving the 51-seat majority necessary for government formation.
The KDP retains political strength in Erbil and Duhok, whereas the PUK wields considerable influence in Sulaymaniyah and Halabja. Historically, their collaboration has been essential for maintaining political stability within the Kurdistan Region.
As leadership delegations prepare for further negotiations, the results of these discussions will significantly influence the political and administrative landscape of the Kurdistan Region.
