Barzani and Mazlum Abdi Discuss Syrian Political Developments Following Key Agreement with Damascus

President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Massoud Barzani, and Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazlum Abdi, held a phone conversation to discuss the latest political developments in Syria, following Abdi’s recent visit to Damascus.
According to Barzani’s headquarters, Abdi briefed Barzani on the details and outcomes of his discussions with the Syrian government, particularly the agreement reached with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa on March 10, 2025. Both leaders emphasized the importance of supporting any initiative that fosters peace and stability in Syria, as well as the necessity of a unified Kurdish stance in the Syrian political process.
The agreement between Mazlum Abdi and President Al-Sharaa outlines a series of key measures aimed at stabilizing Syria and protecting all communities. The main points include:
• Political Inclusion: Ensuring all Syrians, regardless of ethnicity or religion, have the right to participate in governance based on merit.
• Kurdish Rights: Full recognition of Kurdish identity, constitutional rights, and citizenship.
• Ceasefire Implementation: An immediate, nationwide ceasefire to prevent further conflict.
• Institutional Integration: Transition of key infrastructure, including military bases, border crossings, and energy resources, to Syrian state control.
• Safe Return of Displaced People: Guarantees for the safe return of displaced Syrians under state-backed protection.
• Security Measures: Cooperation in countering threats, including remnants of the previous regime and extremist groups.
• Commitment to National Unity: Rejection of division, sectarianism, and hate speech, reaffirming Syria’s unity.
• Implementation Plan: Establishment of executive committees to oversee enforcement, with full implementation expected by the end of 2025.
