In response to growing unrest in Syria, Iraq has reinforced its border with extensive security measures, including the completion of 400 kilometers of a concrete wall along its 615-kilometer boundary with its war-torn neighbor.

Major General Tahseen Al-Khafaji, head of the Security Media Cell, emphasized the enhanced fortifications during a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) on Tuesday. "The Ministries of Interior and Defense, along with the Joint Operations Command and the Popular Mobilization Authority, have implemented strict measures over the past three years to secure the border," Al-Khafaji stated.

Highlighting ongoing efforts, he added, "There is a plan to increase troop deployments in the region. The security forces work tirelessly, utilizing intelligence operations and aerial strikes to dismantle sleeper cells. The Iraqi-Syrian border is stable from our side, and no violations are tolerated."

According to Al-Khafaji, work on the remaining 210-215 kilometers of the border wall is expected to conclude by mid-2025, effectively sealing the border against potential security breaches.

In December 2024, Syria experienced a significant upheaval as opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Turkish-backed factions, launched a decisive offensive. This campaign resulted in the capture of key territories, including Aleppo's airport and several military bases, culminating in the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8, 2024.

In response to the escalating conflict, Iraq has taken measures to secure its borders. An Iraqi delegation held talks in Damascus with Syria's new leadership to discuss developments and border security. Additionally, Iraqi factions are set to redeploy farther from the Syrian border under regional and international pressure to support Syria's transitional phase. Analysts warn that the renewed violence could further destabilize the region, with neighboring Iraq being particularly vulnerable to the ripple effects. Meanwhile, Iraq's measures underscore its determination to shield its borders and maintain stability amid the escalating conflict.
