The Minister of Peshmerga has stated that the reorganization and unification of the Peshmerga forces must be finalized by the conclusion of 2026. He urged both the PUK and KDP to contribute to the success of this initiative, asserting, "Their support is essential for the national project of establishing a Kurdish army." Similarly, the President of the Kurdistan Region acknowledged the existing challenges and the slow pace of progress, yet affirmed, "We will persist until the Peshmerga forces are unified."
During the graduation ceremony for the fourth cohort of Peshmerga officers at the Qalachwalan military college, Shorsh Ismail, the Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, highlighted that "the destiny and future of the Kurdistan Region hinge on the establishment of a robust army equipped with advanced military capabilities."
Ismail further noted, "In spite of the challenges we face, we have successfully implemented the majority of our reform agenda and have made significant strides in reorganizing and unifying the Peshmerga forces, establishing two regions and 11 military divisions under the jurisdiction of the Peshmerga Ministry."
A total of 769 officers, comprising 721 males and 48 females, graduated from the fourth officer training course at Qalachwalan Military College, each receiving the rank of Lieutenant.
During the ceremony, Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Region, addressed the audience, stating, "The Peshmerga forces and all our armed forces must function as an independent national and professional institution, free from political and party disputes. They should serve the nation and the Kurdish people."
Barzani acknowledged the challenges and the gradual progress, but emphasized, "There is notable advancement. We assure the Kurdish populace and our allies in the international coalition of our genuine commitment and determination; we will not relent until we achieve the unification and victory of the Peshmerga forces."
The recent statements by Shorsh Ismail, the Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, and Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Region, underscore the critical importance of unifying these forces to ensure the Kurdistan region's stability and security.
In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to reform and unify the Peshmerga forces. This initiative is part of a broader reform agenda supported by international partners, including the United States and the coalition forces. The goal is to create a professional, apolitical military force that can operate independently of political party influences and serve the interests of the entire Kurdish population.
The journey towards unification has encountered numerous challenges. Political friction between the KDP and PUK has frequently hindered advancement. Nevertheless, the leaders of the Kurdistan Region have reiterated their dedication to surmounting these difficulties and attaining complete unification, despite the lack of tangible progress. The assistance of international allies is vital in this effort, offering training, resources, and strategic advice to the Peshmerga forces.
The unification and professionalization of the Peshmerga forces are vital for the future stability and security of the Kurdistan Region. As the region continues to navigate complex political and security landscapes, the establishment of a unified Kurdish army will play a pivotal role in safeguarding its interests and ensuring long-term peace and prosperity
