The Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections have concluded, with preliminary results available to political parties that closely monitored the ballot boxes. All parties have expressed satisfaction with the process, and no significant allegations of fraud have emerged, marking a major success for the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).
According to the early results, the political landscape in the Kurdistan Region remains largely unchanged. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) maintains its position as the leading party, with a significant margin over the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), which came in second. The New Generation Movement ranks third.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani hailed the election process as a ‘victory,’ emphasizing that it was a testament to the region’s democratic strength.
“I extend my gratitude to the Iraqi Independent High Election Commission for their role in conducting and overseeing the election process. I congratulate them on their efforts. While we are concerned about the absence of many citizens due to technical difficulties, we must make serious efforts to address these issues in future elections to ensure every citizen’s right to vote is fully protected,” said Prime Minister Barzani.
One notable issue during the election was a technical problem with the fingerprint scanners, which prevented hundreds of voters from casting their ballots across the region. This was highlighted as a key area for improvement in future elections.
