In the elections scheduled for October 20, 2024, a total of 38 candidates will vie for the five designated quota seats in the upcoming term of the Kurdistan Parliament. The allocation of these five community seats is as follows: in Sulaymaniyah, one seat is reserved for Turkmen and one for Christians; in Erbil, one seat is allocated for Turkmen and one for Christians; and in Duhok, one seat is designated for Armenians.
In Erbil, there are 14 Turkmen candidates and seven Christian candidates competing for the two available seats. In Sulaymaniyah, six Turkmen candidates and three Christian candidates are contesting the two seats allocated to them, while in Duhok, eight Christian candidates are competing for the single available seat. Previously, the communities held 11 quota seats in the parliament, but these were annulled by the Federal Court of Iraq, which deemed them "unconstitutional." Furthermore, the Court reduced the total number of parliamentary seats from 111 to 100, subsequently reinstating five seats for the communities within this new total.
The sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliamentary elections is set to take place on October 20, 2024. A total of 2,898,578 individuals are eligible to participate in the elections to fill the 100 parliamentary seats, with a minimum of 30 seats reserved for women.
The distribution of seats in the Kurdistan Parliament among the provinces is as follows: Erbil province has 34 seats, including two for communities; Sulaymaniyah province has 38 seats, with two for communities; Duhok province has 25 seats, which includes one for communities; and Halabja province has three seats.
