Iraq's Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, has called for an urgent investigation following a "security breach" after Katyusha rockets hit Baghdad International Airport on Tuesday.

In a statement from the prime minister’s office, Sudani directed the Minister of Interior to launch an immediate inquiry into the incident, which involved several rockets being fired from Baghdad's Ameriya area. The prime minister has demanded that the findings be made public, and those responsible be identified within 48 hours.

According to the Iraqi Interior Ministry, the rockets landed at approximately 12:20 a.m., with one striking the garage of the second regiment of the counter-terrorism services and another landing in an abandoned yard within the airport premises.

The ministry has also initiated a probe into the security forces assigned to the Ameriya area, where the breach originated. The commander of the responsible security unit has been detained for questioning as part of the investigation to uncover how the breach occurred.

No group has claimed responsibility for the rocket attack thus far.

This incident follows heightened unrest across the Middle East. Baghdad has experienced growing instability, with recent protests erupting in response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. Just days ago, supporters of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) attempted to storm the capital's heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses embassies and government buildings, with the intent to set fire to the U.S. Embassy in retaliation for Nasrallah’s death.
