Peregraf— The United States has summoned Iraq’s ambassador in Washington and demanded immediate action to dismantle Iran-aligned militias following a surge in attacks targeting American personnel and facilities.
In a statement published by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau summoned Iraqi Ambassador Nizar Khirullah to deliver Washington’s strong condemnation of what it described as "egregious terrorist attacks" launched from Iraqi territory by Iran-aligned militia groups.
The statement, attributed to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, emphasized that the United States "will not tolerate attacks" on its interests and expects the Iraqi government to immediately take all measures necessary to dismantle Iran-aligned militia groups in Iraq.
The warning follows a sharp escalation in violence, including the April 8 ambush of U.S. diplomats in Baghdad and a broader wave of attacks in recent weeks targeting American citizens, diplomatic facilities, and commercial interests, as well as Iraqi institutions and civilians — including in the Kurdistan Region.
While acknowledging efforts by Iraqi Security Forces to respond, Landau criticized Baghdad for failing to prevent the attacks, warning that alleged political, financial, and operational support by elements linked to the government for such militias is damaging bilateral relations.
The statement underscores growing U.S. pressure on Iraq to assert control over armed groups operating within its territory, amid rising regional tensions and continued attacks attributed to Iran-backed factions.
