Peregraf — An explosion struck the Sarsang oil field in Duhok Province earlier today, forcing a suspension of production, according to a statement from ShaMaran Petroleum Corp.

The company stated it had been informed by HKN Energy Ltd., the operator of the Sarsang Block, that the blast occurred at one of the field’s storage facilities. All personnel have been accounted for, and no injuries were reported.

HKN has launched a full assessment of the incident and is coordinating with local authorities and relevant stakeholders to manage the response and ensure the safety of nearby communities.

Operations at the Sarsang field have been suspended, while production at the nearby Atrush oil field remains shut in as a precaution, the statement added.

ShaMaran and HKN emphasized their commitment to safety and environmental standards, noting that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.

The incident marks the second attack on the Sarsang field since the outbreak of the US-Israel War on Iran. On March 5, drone strikes targeted oil storage tanks at the site, causing significant damage. Today, April 2, 2026, marks the 32nd day of the war.

ShaMaran Petroleum Corp., a Canadian-based oil and gas company, holds an indirect 18% working interest in the Sarsang Block and a 50% interest in the Atrush Block. The company operates in the Kurdistan region of Iraq and is part of the Lundin Group of Companies.
