American Journalist Kidnapped in Iraq; Security Forces Arrest Suspect During Pursuit

Peregraf — Iraq’s Ministry of Interior announced that an American journalist was kidnapped on Tuesday evening by unidentified individuals, prompting an immediate and ongoing security operation to locate and rescue the victim.

According to an official statement, competent security forces swiftly launched pursuit operations based on precise intelligence, intensive field efforts, and tracking of the kidnappers’ movements. The operation led to the interception of a vehicle used by the suspects, which overturned as they attempted to flee.

Security forces successfully arrested one suspect at the scene and seized one of the vehicles involved in the crime. Authorities confirmed that operations are continuing to track down the remaining perpetrators and secure the release of the kidnapped journalist.

The victim has been identified as Shelly Kittleson, an American journalist with Al-Monitor, known for her reporting on the Middle East and Afghanistan. Her work has appeared in several international outlets, including American and Italian media organizations. 

The Ministry emphasized that all efforts are being made to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that further details will be released as investigations progress.

In its statement, the Ministry of Interior reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and protecting foreign nationals, stressing that it “will not allow any attempt to destabilize security or target foreign guests.” Authorities pledged continued vigilance in pursuing those responsible and bringing them to justice in accordance with the law.
