Peregraf — A drone strike targeted the Lanaz oil refinery in Erbil on Saturday for the second time in two days, sparking a fire at the facility and forcing a halt to operations, according to Reuters.
Provincial officials told Reuters that the refinery had already been struck once on March 13, and the latest attack ignited a fire inside the facility. Emergency teams were deployed to contain the blaze.
Authorities said refinery operations have been suspended until the fire is fully extinguished and the extent of the damage is assessed. No immediate reports of casualties were reported.
According to follow-up reporting by the Peregraf Media Foundation, more than 300 drones and missiles have struck various locations across the Kurdistan Region during the first two weeks of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran.
The attacks have been attributed either to Iran or to armed factions affiliated with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of Iran-aligned armed groups operating inside the country.
The intensifying strikes coincide with the ongoing U.S.-Israel war against Iran, now in its 15th day, raising fears that the Kurdistan Region could be drawn further into an expanding regional conflict.
