Peregraf- Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani on Monday called for the formation of a diplomatic alliance involving countries of the region and the European Union to halt the ongoing war and prevent further escalation across the Middle East.

The Iraqi Prime Minister made the remarks during a virtual conference convened by the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission to discuss rapidly evolving regional developments. The meeting brought together leaders and senior officials from Arab and international countries.

According to the Iraqi Prime Minister's media office, Al-Sudani told participants that the continuing conflict requires "a strong and unified position" from the international community to bring the fighting to an end and prevent it from expanding into a wider regional confrontation.

He stressed that dialogue and cooperation must take precedence over military escalation, warning that the current trajectory poses a serious threat to international peace and security.

Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq's opposition to war and aggression and warned against attempts to draw the country into the conflict. He said resorting to violence without international legitimacy and outside the framework of the United Nations Security Council risks turning the crisis into a large-scale regional war.

The Prime Minister called for the creation of a diplomatic coalition that would include regional states and the European Union, aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire and addressing violations of state sovereignty.

He emphasized that respecting sovereignty, maintaining good-neighborly relations, and adhering to the United Nations Charter are essential to stabilizing the region.

Condemnation of Attacks and Sovereignty Violations

In his address, Al-Sudani condemned attacks that have taken place on Iraqi territory by various parties and reiterated Baghdad's rejection of the use of Iraqi land or airspace to conduct military operations against neighboring states.

He also condemned attacks against Iran, warning that violations of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity could further inflame the conflict.

The Iraqi leader said Baghdad also rejects violations of the sovereignty of Arab countries and expressed solidarity with efforts taken by those states to protect their territories and populations.

He further criticized repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanon, describing them as a breach of international law and international conventions.

Call for Diplomacy and Protection of Civilians

Al-Sudani urged regional and international actors to prioritize diplomacy and political dialogue as the primary path to de-escalation. He called for Arab and Islamic countries to unify their positions in order to contain the repercussions of the conflict and safeguard regional stability.

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of protecting diplomatic missions and civilian infrastructure, strongly condemning attacks targeting civilians and critical facilities such as oil installations and nuclear sites.

He warned that continued strikes on such targets would complicate efforts to reach a ceasefire and prolong the conflict, deepening humanitarian suffering across the region.

Appeal to the United Nations

Al-Sudani called on the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a resolution aimed at stopping the war and urged the Security Council to fulfill its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security.

He concluded that coordinated diplomatic action between regional countries and European partners could provide a pathway to de-escalation and help prevent the crisis from spiraling into a broader regional conflict.
