Peregraf — Türkiye's Ministry of National Defence confirmed on Monday, 9 March 2026, that a ballistic missile launched from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was intercepted and destroyed by NATO air and missile defence assets deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Debris from the munition fell on open land in the southern Gaziantep area, causing no injuries.

The debris landed approximately 150 kilometres from Incirlik Air Base, where hundreds of U.S. military personnel are stationed, and around 200 kilometres from a NATO radar installation in Kürecik used to support missile defence systems in the region.

The incident is the second of its kind in five days. On 4 March, Iran fired a separate ballistic missile toward Turkish airspace, which was also intercepted by NATO units in the Eastern Mediterranean after the munition crossed Iraqi and Syrian airspace. That incident marked the first time an Iranian missile had encroached on the airspace of a NATO member state since the launch of Operation Epic Fury on 28 February.

After the first attempted attack, Ankara warned Tehran against actions that could expand the conflict further. Türkiye has not allowed its bases or airspace to be used for strikes on Iran.

Türkiye's Ministry of National Defence reiterated the country's commitment to regional stability, while warning that all necessary measures would be taken to defend its territory and airspace, and calling on all parties to exercise restraint.
