KRG Warns Against Using Kurdistan Region to Threaten Iran Following Formation of Kurdish Opposition Alliance

Peregraf — The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has issued an official statement today, Sunday, February 22, 2026, reaffirming the Region’s commitment to regional stability. The move follows the announcement of a new alliance by five Iranian Kurdish opposition parties calling for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In its statement, the Ministry emphasized that the Kurdistan Region “has always been a pillar of stability and peace” and explicitly rejected any suggestion that its territory could be used to threaten neighboring countries.

“Today, several parties published a statement in which they threatened a neighboring country,” the Ministry stated. “We reaffirm that the Kurdistan Region has never been a source of threat or danger to the security of any neighboring country, and we will not allow any party to use our territory as a base against our neighbors.”

The warning comes just hours after five major Iranian Kurdish opposition groups announced the formation of a unified political front aimed at confronting Tehran. The newly formed coalition, named the Alliance of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan, includes:

*   The Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK)

*   The Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK)

*   The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI)

*   The Organization of Iranian Kurdistan Struggle (Khabat)

*   The Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan

In a joint communiqué, the coalition declared that the current Iranian government has “lost its legitimacy,” arguing that political divisions among opposition groups have historically allowed the regime to remain in power despite widespread discontent.

The alliance outlined a broad political agenda centered on systemic change, including the right to self-determination for Kurds, the establishment of democratic institutions, and increased Kurdish participation in Iran’s political future. It also called for coordination with broader Iranian opposition movements, setting conditions for cooperation such as the recognition of national rights, adherence to democratic principles, and the rejection of authoritarian rule.

The group’s vision for a future Iran is based on democratic governance, secularism, equal rights for all ethnic and religious communities, gender equality, environmental sustainability, and free elections.

The formation of this alliance follows an extended period of dialogue facilitated by the Center for Cooperation of Iranian Kurdish Political Parties. Members described the coalition as a critical step toward political unity.

However, the KRG’s swift response underscores the high sensitivity regarding cross-border political activity. The statement signals Erbil’s ongoing effort to balance internal Kurdish solidarity with critical regional diplomatic relations, particularly with Tehran.

The Ministry concluded by reiterating its firm stance: the Kurdistan Region will remain committed to peace and will not permit its territory to be used as a platform for conflict against neighboring states.
