Iraq’s Ministerial Council for the Economy Advances Revenue Reforms, Reviews Spending Measures

Peregraf - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani chaired a meeting of the Ministerial Council for the Economy on Monday, focusing on government efforts to increase state revenue, rationalize public expenditure, and review the implementation of previous economic decisions.

According to the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as the ministers of Finance, Construction and Housing, Industry, Labor and Social Affairs, and Water Resources. The Acting Minister of Agriculture, the Secretary General of the Council of Ministers, the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, and several economic advisors were also present.

As part of ongoing fiscal reforms, the Council approved the organizational structure of the newly established Revenue Collection Directorate within the Ministry of Finance—a measure endorsed during a previous session. The directorate aims to strengthen revenue collection mechanisms and enhance financial governance.

Iraqi Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized the necessity of appointing qualified and competent staff to the directorate to ensure it meets its objectives and contributes effectively to improving state revenues.

Additionally, the Council reviewed spending measures and approved an exemption for security forces and emergency medical services from a previously adopted decision to reduce fuel subsidies, citing operational and humanitarian grounds.

The Iraqi Prime Minister also stressed the importance of carefully assessing the financial and economic impact of each reform. He noted that the government’s economic approach—aimed at supporting the national economy in the short-to-medium term—continues to receive backing from national political forces.
