Peregraf — Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani on Monday stressed that the post of President of the Republic is the constitutional entitlement of the Kurds, calling for the establishment of a clear and stable mechanism for electing the president to prevent recurring political deadlock.

Barzani made the remarks during a meeting in Pirmam with a high-level delegation from Iraq’s Shia Coordination Framework, which included Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition; Badr Organization Secretary-General Hadi al-Amiri; Al-Asas Coalition leader Mohsen al-Mandalawi; and Coordination Framework Secretary-General Abbas Radhi.

According to a statement issued by Barzani’s headquarters after the meeting, the discussions focused on Iraq’s political situation, the course of the political process, the election of the President of the Republic, and the formation of the new Iraqi federal government.

Addressing the presidential file, Barzani emphasized the need to agree on and institutionalize a specific mechanism for electing the president, warning that the absence of such a framework has repeatedly led to political impasse with each election cycle. He underlined that selecting the presidential candidate should take place within an agreed mechanism that ensures stability and continuity in the political process.

The meeting also reviewed the broader political situation, recent developments in Syria, and regional dynamics, stressing the importance of coordination and cooperation among political forces in addressing current challenges.

The meeting was attended by senior KDP figures, including Nechirvan Barzani and Masrour Barzani, Vice Presidents of the KDP; Fadhil Mirani, Head of the KDP Executive Body; Hoshyar Zebari, Mahmoud Mohammed, and Sidad Barzani, members of the Executive Body; as well as Fuad Hussein, a member of the KDP Political Bureau.
