Barzani and US Envoy Discuss Aleppo Crisis as Clashes Escalate in Kurdish Neighborhoods
Peregraf - Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani and Tom Barrack, the US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria, spoke by phone Friday evening to discuss the intensifying conflict in Aleppo, where Kurdish-majority neighborhoods have become a focal point of renewed violence.
According to a statement from Barzani’s office, the two discussed the political and security situation in the region, with a specific focus on the recent escalation in Aleppo. Both officials underscored the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, normalize the situation, and take concrete steps toward restoring security and stability in Syria. The call comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, led in part by the United States, to manage the crisis and prevent further regional spread.
Renewed Fighting in Kurdish Neighborhoods
The Kurdish-majority districts of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh have faced days of heavy clashes between Syrian government forces and local Kurdish security units, alongside SDF-aligned groups. The Syrian army, supported by allied militias, has surrounded and shelled these areas, designating them “closed military zones” following the expiration of evacuation deadlines.
Despite a temporary ceasefire announced early Friday by the Syrian Ministry of Defense—which stipulated that armed groups could withdraw with only light weapons—Kurdish councils in both neighborhoods rejected the terms. Local leaders characterized the calls to leave as a “demand for surrender” and reaffirmed their commitment to defending the districts.
Humanitarian Impact
The fighting has triggered a growing humanitarian crisis. Local authorities report that nearly 60,000 residents have fled Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, seeking safety in other parts of the country after days of bombardment and urban combat.
The Syrian military offensive follows the stagnation of talks intended to integrate Kurdish-led forces into national structures—a process that has faced consistent setbacks since a 2025 framework agreement aimed at broader national reconciliation.
International Concerns
The situation has drawn significant international attention. The United States is actively mediating through diplomatic channels, including the envoy’s outreach to President Barzani. Washington has emphasized the importance of avoiding a full-scale conflict and pursuing a negotiated resolution to address Syria’s complex political and security challenges.
As tensions remain high in Aleppo’s Kurdish districts, international calls for de-escalation are intensifying, even as local leadership maintains its resolve to remain and protect their communities.
