Iraq, Greece Announce Launch of Direct Flights Starting December

Peregraf- Iraq and Greece will begin operating direct flights between Baghdad and Athens starting next December, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced on Thursday following talks in Baghdad with his Greek counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Hussein said this marks the first visit by a Greek foreign minister to Iraq. He noted that discussions focused on the historical depth of relations between the two countries, rooted in ancient civilizations, as well as prospects for expanded cooperation.

Hussein highlighted that the planned direct air route represents "an important step to strengthen commercial relations." He said the talks also covered cooperation on agriculture, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and academic exchange, including partnerships between universities in both countries.

He added that Iraq raised the issue of water management, an area in which Greece has extensive experience, and that both sides discussed ways to diversify Iraq’s economy and increase investment in tourism and agriculture. The two countries also agreed to organize scholarships and fellowships for Iraqi youth at Greek universities.

The two ministers reviewed regional developments and affirmed support for the U.S. initiative to advance peace in Gaza. Hussein said the visit underscores the strength of Iraq’s ties with European partners.

Gerapetritis emphasized Greece’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Iraq across multiple sectors, saying he was honored to visit "one of the most important countries at the civilizational level." He confirmed the launch of nonstop flights between Baghdad and Athens beginning in December.
