Masrour Barzani Inaugurates Erbil–Duhok Gas Pipeline, Vows to Provide Electricity to All of Iraq from Kurdistan Region
Peregraf- Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today inaugurated the natural gas pipeline linking Erbil and Duhok, a major infrastructure project designed to supply natural gas to the 1000-megawatt Kwashi power station in Semel district.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Barzani said the project represents a significant step toward greater energy independence and environmental sustainability for the Kurdistan Region.
"Kurdistan is a rich region with gas, oil, and minerals, and these natural resources belong to all the people of Kurdistan—not to any party or individual," the KRG Prime Minister declared. "We want to make Kurdistan a place capable of providing electricity for all of Iraq and even for the surrounding areas. This project will help us achieve a cleaner environment, as diesel has had a major impact on pollution."
Barzani emphasized that the KRG remains committed to improving public services and strengthening the energy sector through strategic investments and partnerships. "The KRG has increased its investments in the gas sector with Dana Gas and KAR Group. Now gas production has doubled compared to previous levels, which will help us further enhance electricity generation," he said.
The newly inaugurated gas pipeline stretches 198 kilometers from Erbil to the Kwashi power station in Duhok province. It was implemented by KAR Group at a total cost of $591 million.
The Kwashi Gas Power Station itself is a flagship energy project with a capacity of 1000 megawatts, being developed by Mass Group Holding under a contract with the KRG.
Barzani described the project as a cornerstone of the Kurdistan Region’s long-term strategy to diversify its energy mix, reduce environmental harm, and become a key supplier of electricity to Iraq as a whole.
